Reasons behind Northern Link - Potential benefits of Northern Link - Project Timeline - Study Team

Northern Link
Northern Link is a mainly underground toll road proposed to connect the Western Freeway, at Toowong, to the Inner City Bypass (ICB), at Herston. It forms part of Brisbane City Council's TransApex plan, released in March 2005, which proposes to form an inner-city ring of motorway-standard roads.

Brisbane City Council has decided to proceed with the Northern Link project without the local connections at Toowong and Kelvin Grove that were included in the EIS Reference Project.

A supplementary report to the Northern Link EIS, which addresses matters raised in the submissions to the EIS and includes further information on the project without the local connections, is being considered by the Coordinator-General.

The information on the website has been updated to reflect the findings contained in the Northern Link EIS Supplementary Report. A full copy of the Supplementary Report is available on the EIS Documents page .

Reasons behind Northern Link
Brisbane is experiencing rapid population growth and sustained economic development. This is placing significant pressure on our roads, leading to congestion, delays, increased accident rates and reduced urban amenity.

The continued efficient movement of people and goods is important for maintaining the quality of life of Brisbane residents and the economic sustainability of the region. Northern Link will help free up the congested arterial road network from unnecessary cross-city traffic.

Potential benefits of Northern Link
Northern Link is expected have many positive social and environmental benefits for its surrounding suburbs. These include:

  • reduced traffic congestion along Milton Road and Coronation Drive
  • improved access to the western suburbs
  • reduced travel times between the western suburbs and eastern suburbs
  • increased road capacity, which would facilitate more public transport bus services
  • reduced noise levels and improved air quality on the existing road network.
